Michael Chertoff (November 28, 1953) was President George W. Bush’s second Secretary of Homeland Security and a co-author of the USA PATRIOT Act. He formerly worked as a federal prosecutor, a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and an Assistant United States Attorney General. On February 15, 2005, he took over as Secretary of Homeland Security from Tom Ridge. Chertoff has worked as a senior of counsel at the Covington & Burling law firm in Washington, D.C., since leaving the government. He also co-founded the Chertoff Group, a risk-management and security consulting firm that employs a number of senior officials not only from his time as Secretary of Homeland Security (such as Hon. Paul A.
